RFH: Community Book Discussion – March 22nd New Date

April 17th, 2017

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School District

Community Reading Program

Attention: New Date

Welcome to the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School District’s Community Reading Program. Our newest selection will be Julie Lythcott-Haims’s How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success.

New York Times best-seller, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success examines a disturbing, cultural phenomenon that Lythcott-Haims believes has consequences for parents who regard a “checklisted childhood as the path to achievement.” The book’s genesis came from the author’s ten-year experience as Dean of Freshman at Stanford University, where she counseled ever-increasing numbers of students who, as a result of excessive helicopter parenting, lacked a strong sense of self and were poorly equipped to function as independent adults in the university environment.

We, the members of the RFH Board of Education and the RFH Administration, encourage you to join us in our reading ofHow to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success, and we hope that you will meet with us in March to discuss Lythcott-Haims’s study of hyper-attentive parenting and her advice on how to raise children who have the capacity to take charge of their own lives and become competent, happy adults.

If you wish to preview what Julie Lythcott-Haims explores in her book, watch her TED Talk:  https://www.ted.com/talks/julie_lythcott_haims_how_to_raise_successful_kids_without_over_parenting?language=en.
