College Admissions Testing Timetable and Recommendations

  • Sophomores will take the PSAT in January  of grade 10.
    RFH will register all sophomores to take the PSAT

    • Results are not predictive but will give students experience taking a high-stakes test.

    • Sophomores have not learned all the material on the test, so they should not be expected to excel, but the results will pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, which should be compared with skills they have been taught.

    • When scores reports are released by College Board, sophomores should sign into their College Board account or create their College Board account then link their scores to Khan Academy for strengths analysis and FREE practice.

    Juniors will take the PSAT in October of grade 11.
    RFH will register all juniors to take the PSAT. 

    • When scores reports are released in early December by College Board, juniors should sign into their College Board account or create their College Board account then link their scores to Khan Academy for strengths analysis and provide students with an FREE individualized study plan linked directly with Khan Academy, while keeping them on track to take/repeat SAT’s multiple times in March, May, June, October.

    • Junior PSAT results provide a true baseline from which growth, academic preparation, and readiness to take the SAT, can be measured.

     When high-achieving students do not take the PSAT in grade 11 they forfeit the opportunity to be considered for National Merit 
              Scholarships and National Merit Commended recognition.


    * In 2020, more than 60% colleges and universities have adopted test optional or test blind admission, including the California State Universities and the Ivies. No student should feel pressured to risk their health and safety to take a test.

    A student's first SAT should be taken in the spring of junior year. Students register on College Board's website. be aware of registration deadlines and test dates and plan accordingly.

    • College Board research indicates that students will earn the highest scores in one of the first 3 times they take the SAT.

    • Taking the SAT more than 3 times may red-flag a student.

    • College Board counts every SAT from 9th grade through senior year in a student's testing history.

    • Students cannot send only one set of scores,  using Score Choice, unless the student earns their highest Reading and Math score on a single test date and will be expected to send all of their scores to each college.

    • Most colleges will SuperScore (pull the highest scores from different test dates), but students cannot do so themselves.

    • Spring test dates are in line with Early Decision and Early Action requirements.

    ACT  Students register directly for ACT testing on the ACT website.  Our school code is 311-335

    • ACT, if preferred, should be taken on a similar timetable to SAT.

    • Online practice tests are readily available.

    • All colleges will accept ACT in lieu of SAT.

    • Years ago ACT was regionally accepted in the South and MidWest, While SAT was recognized as the recommended College admission test on the East and West Coasts. That is no longer the case, with all colleges accepting both tests with no preference given.
