National Social Studies Honor Society

By Laws of the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society

This application is open to all Juniors and Seniors, who have excelled in their completion of the core course requirements in Social Studies at RFH. Please direct all questions directly to the advisor of the RFH Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society, Mr. Colella (tcolella@rumsonfairhaven.org).

 

Requirements for membership application:

  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.67.

  • Students must have earned a minimum unweighted average of 90% (A-) across all regular/Level I Social Studies courses or an 85% (B) average across Honors or AP Social Studies courses in the years prior to application (Courses considered in this calculation are any that fall under the Social Studies section of the RFH Course Catalog).

  • Students must complete the Student Applicant Form.

  • Students must receive a teacher recommendation from a current or past Social Studies teacher of their choice. Students will indicate on the Student Applicant Form which teacher we will send the Teacher Recommendation Form to.

  • Application must be submitted in full by Friday, October 4th.

  • Approval and induction into the RFH chapter of the National Social Studies Honor Society will be based on a review of these criteria by a selection committee of social studies teachers at RFH.

  • Approval will take place in October.

  • Induction will take place in December.

  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.67.

  • Students must maintain a minimum unweighted average of 90% (A-) across all regular/Level I Social Studies courses or an 85% (B) average across Honors or AP Social Studies courses (Courses considered in this calculation are any that fall under the Social Studies section of the RFH Course Catalog).

  • Students must be enrolled in at least 5 credits (1 full year course or 2 semester courses) of Social Studies related courses during both their Junior and Senior years.

  • Students must do one of the following to maintain their membership:

    • Join and actively participate in a Social Studies organization at RFH:

      • Model UN

      • Fed Challenge

      • Euro Challenge

      • Mock Trial

      • Psychology Club

    • Volunteer two hours per month in a Social Studies related area. Ideas include but are not limited to:

      • Local political chapter

      • Museum

      • Historical societies

      • Some sort of social activist group/project

  • Students must attend 75% of all NSSHS meetings.

  • A student may be dismissed if he/she violates the standards, obligations, 

or ideals of the Social Studies Honor Society.
