National English Honor Society

Requirements for membership application:

  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.67.

  • Students must have earned a minimum unweighted average of 90% (A-) across all regular/Level I English courses or an 85% (B) average across Honors or AP English courses in the years prior. (Courses considered in this calculation are any that fall under the English section of the RFH Course Catalog).

  • Students’ scores on the ELA Sections of the NJSLA must fall into Performance Levels 4 or 5 (Students performing at levels 4 and 5 met or exceeded expectations).* Will only apply for members of the Class of 2025 and beyond.

  • Students must complete the Student Applicant Form.

  • Students must receive a teacher recommendation from a current or past English teacher of their choice. Students will indicate on the Student Applicant Form which teacher we will send the Teacher Recommendation Form to.

  • Application must be submitted in full by Friday, October 4th.

  • Students must complete an in-person, timed writing sample during Common Lunch any day between Wednesday, October 9th - Friday, October 11th. Come to the Lower Learning Commons any of these three days to complete.

  • Approval and induction into the RFH chapter of the National English Honor Society will be based on a review of these criteria by a selection committee of English teachers at RFH.

  • Approval will take place in October.

  • Induction will take place in December. 

 

Requirements for membership maintenance:

  • Students must maintain a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.67.

  • Students must maintain a minimum unweighted average of 90% (A-) across all regular/Level I English courses or an 85% (B) average across Honors or AP English courses (Courses considered in this calculation are any that fall under the English section of the RFH Course Catalog).

  • Students must do both of the following to maintain their membership. These criteria will be checked and will be the point of discussion at all NEHS meetings:

    • Maintain an active library membership in a local (town, county, private) library. This includes regularly utilizing their resources and services for your own development as a student of reading and writing.

    • Complete a monthly reading /writing log that demonstrates a continued commitment to engaged choice reading and/or personal writing projects.

  • Students are encouraged, but not required, to join and actively participate in an English related organization at RFH:

    • Book Club

    • Storytelling Club

    • Film Society

    • Ethics Club

    • Debate Club

    • Global Impact Club

  • Students must attend 75% of all NEHS meetings.

  • A student may be dismissed if he/she violates the standards, obligations, or ideals of the National English Honor Society.
